John Stamos Taking Kaitlyn Dobrow, Teenage Amputee And Meningococcemia Survivor, On A Date To Disneyland
Kaitlyn Dobrow is going to Disneyland with John Stamos. The 18-year-old teenager -- who has spent the past five months battling a deadly bacterial infection, losing all of her limbs in the process -- was treated to a surprise visit from the “Full House” star, along with his mother Loretta, nephew Blake and two good friends.
Stamos posted a picture of the visit on his Instagram account, explaining that he only did so to raise awareness about Kaitlyn’s struggle. “I'm ONLY doing this cause they asked,” Stamos wrote. “I said no press. but this story is a must read - plus me and katie have a date to Disneyland.”
The 49-year-old actor provided a link to an article in the New York Daily News which tells Kaitlyn’s story.
The Huntington Beach, Calif., native went to the gym after working her shift at the Day’s Inn on Feb. 11, eventually returning home and going to bed at around 1 a.m. Dobrow woke up later that night with a splitting headache and pain throughout her entire body. Dobrow's mother, Kathi, gave her some Advil and sent her back to bed.
By 2:30 p.m. that afternoon, Dobrow was unable to get out of bed. Her mother immediately called paramedics and she was admitted to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange County, Calif.
Dobrow was diagnosed with a bacterial infection called Meningococcemia. Dobrow's condition worsened, and she underwent a series of surgeries, forcing doctors to amputate all her limbs and administer painful skin grafts.
“Initially, she cried when she learned about her limbs,” Dobrow’s father told the Daily News. “But the following day she said this is something I’ll find a way to make work, and joked, ‘Who needs a left arm anyway?’”
Dobrow’s family has set up a donation page going toward her recovery, which will include physical therapy at a rehab facility, prosthetic limbs and modifications to the family home.
“Kaitlyn has had an amazingly positive and courageous attitude throughout this illness and is determined to have a happy, fulfilling life, believing that God has an awesome plan for her future,” Dobrow’s mother says. “She is my hero.”
The story has touched many, including Stamos, who also tweeted, “hanging out with my girls kaitlyn @kristenkiddie - we're planning our trip to @disneyland !!!"
