John Travolta has opened up about the conversation he had with his 10-year-old son, Benjamin, after the death of his wife Kelly Preston.
Travolta, 67, recently sat down for an interview with Kevin Hart for his Peacock talk show "Hart to Heart." During their conversation, the "Gotti" star shared that his and Preston's youngest son expressed a fear of his dad dying following his mom's death last year.
"He said to me once, he said, 'Because Mom passed away, I'm afraid you're going to,'" Travolta told Hart, as quoted by E! News. "And I said, 'Well, it's a very different thing.' And then I went through the differences between my longevity and her limited life."
He said he told his son, "But you know, Ben, you always love the truth and I'm going to tell you the truth about life. Nobody knows when they're going to go or when they're going to stay...Your brother left at 16. Too young. Your mother left at 57 and that was too young. But who's to say?"
In addition to Ben, Preston and Travolta, who tied the knot in 1991, shared daughter Ella, 21. They were also parents to Jett, who died in 2009 following an accident during a family vacation in the Bahamas. He was 16.
Police said Jett died after hitting his head on a bathtub, and a seizure was deemed the official cause of his death. A year and a half after losing their eldest, Travolta and Preston welcomed their youngest son.
"I said, 'I could die tomorrow. You could. Anybody can. So let's look at it that it's part of life. You don't know exactly. You just do your best at trying to live the longest you can,'" Travolta continued.
Preston died at age 57 on July 12, 2020, after a private, two-year battle with breast cancer.
A family representative confirmed the news of her passing to People at the time, saying, "Choosing to keep her fight private, [Kelly] had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends. She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched. Her family asks for your understanding of their need for privacy at this time."
Travolta has frequently paid tribute to his wife on social media. On Mother's Day, he shared on Instagram a throwback family photo showing Benjamin as a baby.
"Dearest Kelly, you brought into my life three of the most wonderful children I have ever known. Thank you. We love and miss you. Happy Mother’s Day," he wrote on Instagram.
