A new set of official pictures for “John Wick: Chapter 3” have been released online. Keanu Reeves is reprising his role as the titular character, and this time around he is being joined by Halle Berry, who plays Sofia.

Fans of the franchise will remember that John had a dog in the first film. The newcomer Sofia will be seen with two. These dogs have an emotional connection to her past. Pictures posted on Entertainment Weekly show the two characters walking alongside each other with the two dogs. The picture was taken in a desert, which presumably is Morocco.

John’s dog, which he lost in the first film, is symbolic of his wife. The two dogs that Sofia has represent someone she has lost, Director Chad Stahelski revealed. The dogs are not there just for sentimental value. A few fight sequences feature the dogs getting into the action. Stahelski added that Sofia’s pets are actually “canine assistants” that “work very well tactically.”

Sofia’s dogs are Belgian Malinois. Which person/people are the dogs connected to Sofia’s past? The fans will have to wait and watch the film to find out.

The other official picture released shows John making his way through the rain in an urban environment. The plot of “John Wick: Chapter 3” revolves around the assassin on the run after the events of the sequel.

Reeves teased that the film begins with his character on the run, and then “it goes crazy from there.” His journey will take him to the Middle-East, where he will meet Sofia. John will find her with the hope that she may be able to help him with his current problem. Reeves also teased that Sofia has a past with John.

The problem that character faces has to do with the criminal council known as the High Table. Two newcomers to the franchise Mark Dacascos and Asia Kate Dillon play members of this council.

Stahelski feels that “John Wick 3” is a bit of an origin story. The fans will get to learn more about the background of the deadly assassin. Anjelica Huston will be playing a character who has raised John and protected him.

Despite the drama and the emotional side of the film, it is still an action flick. The director has promised the death count to be slightly higher than the previous film. A report by Collider notes that there is a risk of the film focusing too much on the “ exposition and background.” A report by Screen Rant points out that the franchise has so far been successful without going into the background of the assassin.

“John Wick: Chapter 3” will be released on May 17, 2019 in the U.S.
