Johnny Depp has claimed that Amber Heard may have struck up a romance with him in order to advance her own career in Hollywood.
Depp, who is suing The Sun's publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN) for over a report in April 2018 that called him a “wife-beater,” made the latest allegation as he took the stand on Tuesday for his U.K. libel case.
Depp, 56, claimed that Heard, 34, approached him with a clear agenda. Heard, as per Depp, would try to pose as an expert or intellectual on the topics that were of interest to him and would try to ingratiate herself with him.
The actor alleged in the court filings that Heard presented herself as his carbon copy, with exactly the “same interests, thoughts, favorite writers, and taste in music and art” as him.
Apparently, Depp did not notice any of the red flags then and instead of seeing it as “calculated, sociopathic and emotionally dishonest”, he found it “endearing and sweet."
"She was beautiful, seemingly incredibly interested in me and my work, and I fell for it," Depp said in court documents obtained by People magazine.
“It was not until much later that I understood that she had an agenda, namely to get married to me in order to progress her own career and/or to benefit financially, and she knew how to bring it about," the actor further added.
Depp believes he was an "easy target" for Heard, whom he described as "calculating" and "completely emotionally dishonest."
Depp and Heard got married in 2015, four years after their first meeting in 2011 on the set of "The Rum Diary." They got divorced a year later, and she donated the $7 million settlement she received to charity.
The actress and model accused Depp of abusing her during their 15-month marriage. The actor has vehemently denied this claim.
In his witness statements, Depp said he and Heard had sought marriage counseling before their divorce. The counselor allegedly confirmed that his wife had a "borderline, toxic narcissistic personality disorder and is a sociopath."
The actor has also accused his former wife of repeatedly punching him in the face.
In December 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post where she described the experience of being a victim of domestic violence. Although she did not mention Depp by name, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor sued her for defamation and said Heard was “not a victim of domestic abuse, she is a perpetrator.”
