KEY POINTS
- Jojo Siwa's first "gay awakening" was a Jenna Dewan performance
- Demi Lovato's tour performance was also a defining moment
- Lovato expressed joy in playing a role in Siwa's sexual awakening
Jojo Siwa, who came out as a member of the LGBTQ community last year, recently opened up about her first "gay awakening" during her appearance as a guest on singer Demi Lovato's podcast.
On Wednesday’s episode of “4D with Demi Lovato,” 18-year-old Siwa revealed her first "gay awakening" was when she saw Jenna Dewan’s performance on “Lip Sync Battle.” The social media star also told Lovato how the latter helped her figure out her sexual identity at a young age.
The Nickelodeon star added one of Lovato’s tour performances of “Cool for the summer” actually helped her realize she was indeed attracted to girls.
“Do you remember your dancer, her name is Jojo Gomez and you did “Cool for the summer” together. I remember seeing that and just being a little too interested,” Siwa said, leading to Lovato shrieking and laughing in excitement.
Siwa went on to say her girlfriend, Kylie Prew, who saw the show with her mom, was also affected by Lovato’s interaction with Gomez during the show.
“She was there with her mom, and she said, ‘After the show, my mom said, “Great show, wasn’t it?”’ And Kylie was like, ‘Yup, so great,’” Siwa shared, which elicited more laughter from the host.
“Wow, I’m so happy, I can play a role,” Lovato said in the 38-minute podcast
Siwa came out as a member of the pride community in January by lip-syncing to Lady Gaga’s “Born this way” in a viral TikTok video.
A day later, she posted a photo wearing a shirt with a print that says, “Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever,” an article by Variety said.
Meanwhile, Lovato came out as a nonbinary in May, and said that “Cool for the summer” was also instrumental in their coming out story.
“When I did cool for the summer…that song, for me, was actually my way of sharing with the world without confirming that I was bisexual,” they told Siwa. “Like I said I didn’t come out until 2017 but cool for the summer was like 2014, 2015 so that, to me, it was my way of saying I’m not ready to come out…I’m so happy that you could see a little glimpse of that pride through that performance.”
Aside from Lovato and Siwa, the other celebrities who came out gay this year include American Idol Alumni, David Archuleta, T.J. Osborne, singer Kehlani and TV actor Ronen Rubinstein, according to the Insider.
