Jon Jones Releases Powerful Statement After Thiago Santos' Loss To Glover Teixeira
KEY POINTS
- Former UFC champ Jon Jones is glad Glover Teixeira beat Thiago Santos
- Jones thinks he got away from people accusing him of ducking Santos
- Teixeira might be on the verge of another title shot
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones pointed out one good reason why he’s happy that Glover Teixeira thumped Thiago Santos.
Both men squared off against each other in the main event of UFC Vegas 13 on Saturday. After knocking down Santos with a massive punch, Teixeira went on to submit “Marreta” in the third round.
One of the most notable fighters who commented on Santos’ devastating defeat was Jones. Taking his thoughts to Twitter, “Bones” felt relieved that Teixeira won because he wouldn’t have to deal with keyboard warriors claiming he’s ducking a rematch with Santos.
“So glad I don’t have to read tweets about running from [Thiago] Santos, If he would’ve won everyone would be talking mad trash tonight,” he wrote.
Teixeira and Santos both failed to dethrone Jones as the UFC light heavyweight king, with the former dropping a lopsided decision loss at UFC 172 in April 2014.
On the other hand, Santos fell short against Jones via razor-thin split decision at UFC 239 in July 2019. Many believed that he was “robbed” and should have gotten the judges’ nod over Jones.
But despite the close fight, the Brazilian recently admitted that he was badly beaten by the former champ.
“I didn’t go to the hospital that night,” Santos told ESPN ahead of UFC Vegas 13. “I went back to my hotel, and then the hospital the next day. But I knew my knee was completely torn, because every time I tried to get up and urinate the night after the fight, I couldn’t get up. I needed help to get to the bathroom.”
At this point, Jones has made it clear to everybody that his plan is to move up to heavyweight for his next bout under the UFC banner. In simpler terms, a second encounter with Santos has become more unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Santos is dispirited by his defeat. In a statement on social media, the 36-year-old admitted, “I’m totally disappointed and embarrassed by my performance, I didn’t do anything I trained, I choked, I wasn’t the fighter I am. I apologize to my coaches and team and thank everyone for their effort, you’re great.
Meanwhile, Teixeira is nearing another UFC title shot following an impressive performance at UFC Vegas 13. Head honcho Dana White bared the possibility that the 41-year-old could be next in line for a crack at the gold-plated hardware.
“Yeah, it’s something we need to figure out,” White said of Teixeira’s call for another title shot. “But I heard him and I agree with him and I’m taking him seriously. So yeah, I’m not going to doubt this guy anymore. ”
