Jordana Brewster is stepping into the horror genre once again as the actress has been cast in “Shrine,” the upcoming feature adaptation of the 1983 novel by James Herbert. The “Fast & Furious” star will appear on screen with “The Walking Dead” actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the new film by Screen Gems.

Adapted and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos, “Shrine” follows a disgraced journalist (Morgan) who finds a series of apparently heavenly miracles in a small New England town and uses this to make a career comeback. However, he later discovers that the “miracles” may come from something much darker.

Brewster will be playing a leading role alongside Morgan, according to Deadline. The novel by the late international bestselling author explored themes of religion, hysteria, demonic possession, and healing.

Spiliotopoulos will be producing the project along with filmmaker Sam Raimi under his production company Ghost House. Filming is set to begin in Feb. 2020. “Shrine” will mark Spiliotopoulos’ directorial debut. He's known mostly for his writing work on films such as “Hercules,” “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and this year’s reboot of “Charlie’s Angels.” The screenwriter is also working on “Bright 2” with David Ayer as well as the G.I. Joe spin-off film “Snake Eyes”.

Having her start in soap operas like “As The World Turns,” Brewster has been mostly known for playing Mia Toretto in “The Fast and the Furious” franchise. She will be returning to her role in “Fast & Furious 9,” which has wrapped production and will release in May 2020. She has also recently worked on the indie flick “Bailey and Darla” with Brittany Snow and Sam Richardson.

The only horror film she’s been in previously was “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” back in 2006. The actress returned to television in the series regular role of Dr. Maureen Cahill in “Lethal Weapon” for two seasons and made guest appearances on “Magnum P.I.”

Starting production next year, "Shrine" does not have a tentative release date yet.
