Jose Mourinho Prioritizing Former Real Madrid Star’s Happiness At Tottenham
KEY POINTS
- Jose Mourinho emphasized that he wants Gareth Bale to succeed with the Spurs
- Bale struggled to gain playing time in his last season with Real Madrid
- The Welsh star is a four-time Champions League winner
Gareth Bale was once the superstar scorer for Real Madrid before spending the majority of the past year on Los Blancos' bench. With the winger returning to Tottenham Hotspur, Jose Mourinho said that it’s important that Bale is happy with the club.
The Welsh star is currently on loan with the Spurs and has yet to play as he is recovering from a knee injury he sustained over the summer.
"The team is the most important thing and Gareth is here to help the team, but at the same time we care about him," Mourinho told Sky Sports.
Bale has been one of the more talented scorers in European football over the past decade. In 251 appearances with the Santiago Bernabeu-based squad, he scored 105 times to go along with 68 assists. Throughout his stay with Real Madrid, he hauled multiple accomplishments, including four Champions League trophies.
But it has been a rough few months for Bale and returning to his former club can serve as a fresh start.
"So the decision we are going make is going to be for the good of the team, but also for him," Mourinho shared.
"It is very important he has a happy season with us at this moment in his career," the veteran manager added.
While Bale hasn’t produced big numbers in recent times, he still possesses the potential to contribute to the Spurs.
"Bale will not just have a positive effect on his new Tottenham teammates and give them a massive confidence boost, he will change the way opposition players feel about facing Spurs," former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC Sport.
Mourinho’s team has been performing well in the past few weeks, highlighted by a 6-1 beating of Manchester United. Heung-min Son and Harry Kane stood out in that match as they both scored a brace. Their team is currently in sixth place in the Premier League standings, holding two wins, a draw and a loss across four games.
It will only be a matter of time before Bale can make an impact in his current squad. For now, the Spurs are preparing to face West Ham United in their next bout on Sunday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
