Josh Gordon Reinstated To Cleveland Browns On Conditional Basis
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been reinstated on a conditional basis effective immediately. Gordon, 26, has reportedly taken the necessary steps — including taking care of his personal well-being — to prepare for his return to the league.
Gordon was scheduled to meet with the NFL on Wednesday about being reinstated. The player was initially banned in September 2016 following a violation of the league's substance policy.
"Effective immediately, Gordon may join the Browns to attend meetings, engage in conditioning work and individual workouts," the league said Wednesday in a press release issued to International Business Times. "Subject to compliance with clinical and other requirements, he will be placed on the Commissioner's Exempt list and be permitted to practice with the team beginning on Monday, November 20."
Beginning November 27, Gordon will be permitted to return to active status at the team's discretion. Gordon could, however, remain on the Commissioner's Exempt list for an additional week starting November 27 before returning to active status.
"Everyone — including Josh's teammates and coaches, the Browns' ownership and organization, the Program professionals and all of us at the league office — want him to have every opportunity to resume his career and to be successful in the NFL," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press release Wednesday. "Whether that happens, however, at the end of the day will depend on Josh."
Goodell added, "His commitment to sobriety and to reaching his goals in football and beyond will determine his success. It ultimately is up to Josh."
Gordon served a rehab stint in August ahead of his return to the NFL. The footballer has visited a rehab facility to aid in his recovery at least four times, according to reports.
The Cleveland Browns would own the rights to Gordon's contract for two more seasons.
