JR Smith Disses Kris Humphries In Kanye West Twitter Jab
Knicks star J.R. Smith responded to a gloating tweet by Nets player Kris Humphries shortly after New Jersey beat New York Monday night at Madison Square Garden with a controversial tweet aimed at Humphries' wife, Kim Kardashian, who is pursuing a divorce from the player as she is pregnant a child from her current boyfriend, superstar rapper Kanye West.
Humphries sent out the following taunting tweet shortly after his Nets team edged their cross-town rival Knicks out at home by a score of 88-85:
"Big game tonight! The Garden got really quiet on the way out! #Brooklyn," he tweeted from his official Twitter account.
The tweet was a fairly standard jib at a losing team, and it garnered nearly 900 retweets in two hours.
But Smith -- who has become a big part of New York's success this year and is known as a fiery player and personality -- turned Humphries' tweet around on him, and in doing so started what may become a major flame war.
Responding to Humphries' initial tweet, Smith tweeted the following arguably below-the-belt remark a couple of hours later:
"Wasnt quiet when Kanye tore it down last month! RT@KrisHumphries: Big game tonight! The Garden got really quiet on the way out! #Brooklyn," Smith tweeted from his official Twitter account.
To those who aren't familiar with the history between Humphries, Kardashian and Kanye, it may seem like a fairly innocent joke. But it is anything but, as Smith was digging at Humphries' romantic life by bringing up Yeezy, the man who is now dating the Nets star's wife.
And Twitter immediately noticed the harsh shade Smith was throwing Humphries' way, as Smith's insult was retweeted more than 20,000 times in the first hour after he posted it.
The insult went so viral that the term "JR Smith" trended nationally on Twitter for a short while after he sent it out, and thousands of comments were being made by Twitter users shocked - or elated - to see Smith hit Humphries where it hurts.
And most of the comments were in support of Smith, for instance, this one by Twitter user @MikeSilvaMedia:
"@TheRealJRSmith @KrisHumphries you tell him JR, don't forget how he got smacked around by the Kardashian clan!"
It's unclear whether the NBA will have anything to say about the tweet, which comes just a couple weeks after Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony was suspended for one game by NBA Commissioner David Stern for confronting Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett after the Jan. 7 game between the two conference rivals.
The spat between Garnett and Anthony reportedly arose from comments Garnett made to Anthony on the court during the heated contest at Madison Square Garden in New York City (which the Knicks also lost.) Those comments reportedly included a remark by Garnett that Anthony's wife La La tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios, but Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers later denied that such a conversation ever took place.
Either way, Anthony verbally confronted Garnett in the tunnels of MSG, before following him out to the Celtics bus, where he attempted to confront Garnett again before the altercation was stopped by a number of folks including Garden security guards and even Knicks Head Coach Mike Woodson.
And the Monday tweet wasn't the only time Smith has insulted the Nets or their players in recent days. Reporter Fred Kerber of the New York Daily News reported that he had some negative things to say about the Nets over the weekend:
"It's definitely a rivalry game," Smith told Kerber, referencing the Nets. "We don't like them, they don't like us."
Kanye West, the rapper behind hits like "Gold Digger" and "Jesus Walks," is currently dating Kim Kardashian, who is attempting to divorce Humphries after a marriage that lasted barely more than two months.
Kardashian and Humphries' dirty laundry has been aired all over the world as the tabloid press dissect every iteration of their ill-fated relationship, and the world eagerly awaits the birth of West and Kardashian's child, which will be quite some time as West only announced the pregnancy earlier this month.
