A Juilliard-trained concert pianist who has performed all over the world was arrested and charged Wednesday with the killing of a woman who was found stabbed to death in her South Carolina home last month, police said.
Zachary Hughes, 29, of Greenville, was arrested on the murder charge for allegedly stabbing 41-year-old veterinary technician Christina Parcell to death at her home in Greer, South Carolina, on Oct. 13, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department. The relationship between the two is unclear to authorities.
"It was a very brutal crime scene," Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis was quoted as saying by the Associated Press at a press conference Thursday.
Deputies responded to a Greer residence on the night of Oct. 13 after a woman, since identified as Parcell, was found dead inside the home by someone familiar with her, Lewis said.
The victim had been "brutally stabbed multiple times," according to the sheriff.
Lewis said investigators discovered physical evidence that linked Hughes to the crime.
On Wednesday, Hughes turned himself in to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. He was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Lewis said the killing was "definitely targeted," adding, "It was more than obvious that he intended to kill her and he went over there to kill her."
Police said they are still looking into the relationship between Hughes and Parcell and the motive for the crime.
Lewis also suggested that more charges may be coming and that more people may be charged in the ongoing "very unique" investigation.
Investigators are still "working to investigate the relationship between Hughes and the victim and the motive behind the brutally violent murder that left Parcell stabbed multiple times," according to a news release from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.
Hughes is being held in the Greenville County Detention Center with no bond.
Two other men connected to Parcell were recently arrested, The Daily Beast noted. One was Parcell’s fiancé Bradly Post, who was arrested on child pornography charges, while John Mello, who shared a child with Parcell, was arrested on child custody charges.
The investigation into Parcell's death is ongoing, authorities said.
