Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool FC's interest in Kylian Mbappe but the Reds are not in the race to sign the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar.
Mbappe's current contract with PSG is due to expire in the 2022 summer and the French forward has not agreed to an extension with the Parc des Princes side. There had been links between Liverpool and Mbappe in the past but Klopp has made it clear that his side is not involved in the player's transfer process.
"Of course, we are interested in Kylian Mbappe, we are not blind! Nothing to say about [contact with the player], but between Kylian and Liverpool, it is all set, it is all fine. We like him - if you don't like him then you have to question yourself! But no, we can not be part of these battles. There must be other clubs involved, but that is fine. He is still a great player," Klopp said in a pre-match press conference Monday, Goal reported.
Mbappe finished the 2021-22 Ligue 1 season as the leading goal scorer with 25 goals in 34 games as PSG clinched the top flight in France. Mbappe recently traveled to Qatar after being named Ligue 1 Player of the Year, along with other UNFP award winners. He, however, spent just a few hours there.
Now that he's back from Qatar for a final meeting with his family and his whole camp regarding the offer he has received from Real Madrid, the La Liga champions are waiting for an official confirmation from the player and PSG, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who has a credible record in the European transfer market.
Overall, Mbappe finished the 2021-22 season with 36 goals and 26 assists in 45 competitive appearances for PSG. Neymar, with 12 goals, is second on the list of most goals for PSG ahead of Lionel Messi's 11 goals.
