  • Liverpool want to sign a midfielder next summer
  • They failed to bring in a replacement for Wijnaldum ahead of the 2021-22 term
  • Liverpool have eyes on Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz

Jurgen Klopp reportedly wants to sign a midfielder during the 2022 summer transfer window and Liverpool have eyes on Napoli's Fabian Ruiz.

Following the departure of Gini Wijnaldum this summer, Liverpool failed to bring in a replacement. Meanwhile, Ruiz is experiencing an excellent season with Napoli and is ready to make a leap in his career by playing for a big club, according to Spanish publication Fichajes.

It is reported that Ruiz will fit well in Liverpool's desired profile as he can play at the base of the play and also be close to the area and can be decisive in the last pass.

Liverpool may have to compete with FC Barcelona in the race to sign Ruiz next summer, Catalan outlet El Nacional reported.

Ruiz will have just a year left on his contract with Napoli next summer and if the 25-year-old midfielder refuses to sign an extension, the Serie A club will be forced to cash in on him.

Ruiz, who can play as both central and defensive midfielder, is considered amongst the most talented youngsters at present and could be a valuable addition.

In 18 competitive appearances for Napoli in the 2021-22 campaign, Ruiz has already netted five goals and also provided three assists. His performances have had a great influence on Napoli, who are well in the title challenge. With 36 points, the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium side is placed third in the Serie A table but is only two points behind leaders AC Milan.

Liverpool have also been linked with Porto's Luis Diaz.

Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in January as the duo will head home on international duty for the Africa Cup of Nations. Liverpool boss Klopp wants to add a forward to his squad in order to help reduce the attacking burden on the side during Mane and Salah's absence.

With the latest nail-biting 1-0 victory over Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday, Liverpool climbed to second place in the league table and are only a point behind table-toppers Manchester City.
