'Kai The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker' Arrested In Murder Of New Jersey Attorney
The Internet celebrity known as “Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” has been arrested in connection with the murder of a New Jersey attorney.
According to ABC New York, the 24-year-old Caleb Lawrence McGillvary was detained and arrested by the Philadelphia Police Department at a Greyhound bus station on Thursday. Earlier in the day, McGillvary was named the suspect in the murder of Clark, N.J., resident Joseph Galfy Jr., who was found dead in his home on Monday.
McGillvary, who also goes by Kai and Kai Lawrence, first became an online sensation in February, when he used a hatchet to save a Fresno, Calif., woman from being attacked by a deranged racist man.
After the incident, McGillvary gave a bizarre interview to a local Fox affiliate, which earned him praise online as “Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker.”
For several years, McGillvary has been homeless, traveling across the country and relying on the goodwill of strangers he meets. He's called this kind of nomadic lifestyle “homefree.”
According to NBC Philadelphia, investigators believe that McGillvary met Galfy at Times Square in Manhattan on Saturday night, and the two went to Galfy’s New Jersey home and possibly had a “sexual encounter.” On Monday, Galfy was found dead in his home, killed by blunt force trauma. Investigators believe that after their encounter, McGillvary killed the lawyer and left the scene.
After fleeing New Jersey, McGillvary surfaced in Philadelphia and reportedly had plans to travel to Georgia next. He also cut his hair in an attempt to conceal his now-famous appearance. Before his arrest, McGillvary was last seen at a light-rail station near Haddonfield, New Jersey.
Gawker reports that on Tuesday, McGillvary posted a cryptic Facebook status alleging that he may have been drugged and raped by Galfy.
“What would you do if you woke up with a groggy head, metallic taste in your mouth, in a stranger's house... walked to the mirror and seen come dripping from the side of your face from your mouth, and started wretching, realizing that someone had drugged, raped and (had sex with you)? what would you do?” he wrote.
McGillvart’s bail is set at $3 million.
