Kalani Brown, Baylor End UConn's 126-Game Winning Streak, Coach Mulkey Reacts
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women’s basketball saw a major winning streak come to an end on Thursday night when the top-ranked University of Connecticut Huskies lost 68-57 to the number eight ranked Baylor Lady Bears.
It was the UConn Huskies’ first regular-season loss since Nov. 17, 2014, they had previously won 126 straight games before their loss on Thursday night. Moreover, this was also their first regulation time loss in 2019 games and the last time UConn lost a true road game in regulation was on Dec. 18, 2011, against the then top-ranked Baylor, according to ESPNStatsInfo.
The Huskies had the lead just once in the game and that was when Crystal Dangerfield scored in the opening minute of the game to make 2-0. After they trailed Baylor at every point in the game which ended seeing them lose by 11 points.
According to Kelli Stacy of the Hartford Courant, the Huskies struggled throughout the game with the Lady Bears’ defense and despite showing potential to come back during the course of the game they were unable to continue their winning run.
Baylor had the lead at all intervals during the game, but the Huskies were able to trim it down to just a point at half-time, but were unable to maintain their momentum and were trailing by four at the end of the third quarter. However, a string of missed shots in the fourth quarter would see the lead for Baylor jump to 10, which was insurmountable for the top-ranked American Athletic Conference side.
Kalani Brown led the way for the Baylor ladies, who recorded their first ever win in program history over a number one ranked side. She ended the game with 20 points and 17 rebounds and while NaLyssa Smith and Chloe Jackson had 12 and 11 points respectively.
Kim Mulkey, the coach of the Lady Bears, admitted the game between the two teams is good for women’s basketball, as both teams have a good history. The coach is the first person to win a national basketball championship as a player, assistant coach and a head coach.
"UConn gets everyone's best shot, they don't lose much, we don't lose much, and when you can do that year-after-year, so when we play each other it's good for women's basketball. We'll enjoy this, but we are now focused on Lubbock, Texas,” Mulkey said after the win, according to ESPN program director David Smoak.
