Kamaru Usman Interested In Jake Paul Fight, Confident Against Conor McGregor
Fresh off his win at UFC 261, Kamaru Usman is ready to take on the biggest names in combat sports. That includes Jake Paul, whom the UFC welterweight champion seemingly prefers to fight over MMA’s top star.
Usman told TMZ that has more interest in fighting Paul than Conor McGregor. While the 33-year-old is confident he'd defeat the Irish star, Usman would prefer to show the YouTuber what it would be like to face a UFC champ.
“If these guys don't show me anything, maybe I'll put out one of these guys who think ‘I can box’ and beat the (expletive) out of them,” Usman told TMZ.
Former UFC champion Daniel Cormier has challenged Paul to an MMA fight after the two exchanged words at UFC 261. It’s unlikely that Paul would make the switch from boxing, where he’s experienced so much success.
“DC, sit down, let me take care of that for you,” Usman said.
Usman knocked out Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261 to remain undefeated in the UFC.
Usman, Cormier and other UFC stars are likely intrigued by the payday that former UFC fighter Ben Askren received for his fight against Paul. Askren didn’t make it to the second round before being knocked out by Paul, but he was guaranteed $500,000 for the bout in addition to additional bonuses he likely made from pay-per-view buys.
The fight between Askren and Paul reportedly likely sold at least 1.2 million buys. UFC 261 likely didn’t come close to that number.
A PPV headlined by McGregor and Usman could top that figure, considering McGregor’s last fight generated a reported 1.6 million buys. The MMA stars have traded barbs on social media, though Usman doesn’t appear to think a meeting in the cage is in the cards soon.
“He’s fought once in the last year and a half and that didn”t end well for him,” Usman said, regarding McGregor.
“Imagine what I would do to him. I would take his life in there.”
McGregor was knocked out by Dustin Poirier when he last stepped inside the octagon in January. The two are set for a rematch in July.
