- Kanye West is praying for Issa Rae after she mentioned the rapper in one "SNL" sketch
- Rae's "SNL" character said she was voting for everybody Black but not West
- The comedian's character voiced support to a Black woman running for local office
Kanye West responded after Issa Rae mentioned him in a joke she made on "Saturday Night Live." The presidential hopeful did not hit back at Rae but chose to pray for her and her family.
"Ive always said SNL uses black people to hold other black people back My heart goes out to Issa Rae," West tweeted on Sunday.
"I’m praying for her and her family I know that the twenty years of service that I’ve paid in the entertainment field has furthered our ability to be more successful."
In the sketch shown on "SNL's" latest episode, Rae portrayed Jamele Demmings, a lawyer for the NAACP who was being interviewed by talk show host Kenan Thompson on "Your Voice Chicago." She was asked about the upcoming election and Rae's character said she would be "voting for everybody Black," referencing her 2017 Emmy Awards viral moment when she said she was "rooting for everybody Black."
However, when Thompson mentioned the presidential race between Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Kanye West, Rae's character said, "Kanye? F him!"
"For too long our people’s voices have not been heard. It’s our duty to stand together and take our power back," Rae said during the sketch.
She also pointed out a young Black woman running for local office without experience and said that it is "exactly why we need her. New voices, it's the only way change will happen."
After hearing about a billionaire joining one race, Rae's character said, "How can someone who’s so rich know anything about us? Money corrupts the whole system." But when she learned that the Black candidate was the billionaire, she seemed to have a change of heart as she said, "I find that so inspiring. We need more entrepreneurs like that in our community.”
Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian received intense backlash for seemingly endorsing West. On Thursday, she shared a photo of her in her Instagram Story wearing West’s “Vote Kanye” hat. Many didn’t like Kardashian’s move because they didn’t approve of West’s political ambitions and she has 102 million followers who might follow whatever she does.
"[Kourtney Kardashian] posting an insta story to her 102 MILLION followers encouraging them to vote for kanye is one of the most irresponsible, egregious and reckless uses of that family’s platform that I’ve ever seen," one netizen tweeted.
