The son of Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was charged for brutally stabbing his 60-year-old neighbor following an argument in June. Adam Abdul-Jabbar, 28, faces nearly 10 years in prison in the alleged stabbing incident, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced Tuesday.

Adam was charged with three felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one felony count of carrying a dirk or dagger, among other counts.

On June 9, Adam allegedly stabbed his neighbor, Ray Winsor, outside of their San Clemente, California, homes. He allegedly used a hunting knife in the dispute over trash cans, according to Spitzer’s office. After the confrontation escalated, Adam attacked Winsor with the large hunting knife, stabbing him multiple times, including in the back of the head, which caused a skull fracture and brain bleeding.

Winsor collapsed in front of the emergency room after his wife drove him to a hospital, Spitzer’s office said.

“A dispute between neighbors should never escalate to violence, much less the ruthless nature of this attack,” Spitzer said in a statement. “Violence of any kind will not be tolerated in Orange County and those who choose to inflict violence on others will be prosecuted by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office to the fullest extent of the law.”

Adam is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 9, 2020.

“It was the complaining witness in this matter who initiated the altercation and it was Mr. Abdul-Jabbar who contacted the police to report it,” Shawn Holley, the attorney for Abdul-Jabbar, said in a statement. “For these reasons and many more, we are disappointed that this case was filed, but stand ready to address the charges in court,” Holley went on.

Winsor filed a civil lawsuit against Adam claiming he nearly died of blood loss following the incident.

"I sort of got on him because the lady who takes care of him is 83-year-old, he doesn't do anything for her and it just bums me out, she's in a walker taking her trash cans down," he told Eyewitness News in June.

Winsor said Adam yelled, "Shut your f------ mouth, I’m gonna stick a knife through your teeth" before stabbing him seven times.

Adam was arrested the day of the incident and released the following day after posting $25,000 bail.
