KEY POINTS
- Real Madrid defeated Seville 3-2 in La Liga on Sunday
- Karim Benzema netted a late winner for Los Blancos
- It was Benzema's 25th league goal this season
Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema bagged a few records after scoring an injury-time winner against Seville in the La Liga on Sunday.
With the 92nd minute winner against Seville, Benzema became Real Madrid’s third-leading goal scorer in the history of La Liga, according to Real Madrid’s official website.
The France national now has netted 217 La Liga goals for Los Blancos, one more than legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano. Only Cristiano Ronaldo with 312 goals and Raul with 228 goals are ahead of him in the list of most league goals for Real Madrid.
The goal against Seville also took Benzema’s tally of league goals in the 2021-22 La Liga to 25, registering his best tally in a single league campaign in his entire Real Madrid career, according to Opta Jose. His previous best was 24 league goals, which he had scored in the 2015-16 league season for the Santiago Bernabeu side.
Seville went into the half-time break with a 2-0 lead Sunday. A few minutes into the second half, Rodrygo pulled one back for the visitors before substitute Nacho netted an 82nd-minute equalizer.
Benzema then cut a shot past the Seville keeper Bono to put Real Madrid 15 points clear at the top of the table with just six games remaining in the league season.
Speaking in a post-match interview, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said that the first-half performance was "the coach’s fault" before praising his side for the way they bounced back in the crucial second part of the game.
"The first-half performance was the coach's fault and the second half was down to the players' quality. We didn't lose our heads. We put a few things right that weren't going well in the first half. We weren't solid enough when it came to recovery in the first half. They probed two or three times in transition and our possession wasn't right. We fixed two or three things," Ancelotti said in the interview.
Real Madrid’s next fixture is against Osasuna in La Liga on Wednesday before their all-important Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City next week at Etihad.
