Kate McKinnon Gets Played Off At 2017 Emmys After Thanking Hillary Clinton
Kate McKinnon was announced as one of the first winners at the 2017 Emmys in Los Angeles on CBS Sunday night, taking the award for best supporting actress in a comedy series. She thanked several people in her acceptance speech, including the celebrity whom she’s most well-known for impersonating.
McKinnon thanked Hillary Clinton, whom she portrayed seemingly on a weekly basis during the 2016 United States presidential election. The actress almost didn’t get a chance to finish her speech as the “cut off” music began to play when she mentioned the former democratic nominee’s name.
“On a very personal note, I want to say thank you to Hillary Clinton for your grace and grit,” McKinnon said, just as the music started playing.

McKinnon also thanked Lorne Michaels, the “Saturday Night Live” writers, and her mom and sister for helping her win the award. McKinnon is a repeat winner, having won the same award last year.
McKinnon often played Clinton opposite Alec Baldwin, who became a regular actor on “Saturday Night Live” last season so he could portray Donald Trump. Baldwin was also recognized by the Emmys for his role on the show, winning the award for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.
While some celebrities might not appreciate it when members of the “Saturday Night Live” cast impersonate them, Clinton doesn’t appear to fall into that category. She was seen out in New York City have dinner with McKinnon earlier this year.
Clinton has appeared on “Saturday Night Live” multiple times, and she showed up on the show two seasons ago during a scene in which McKinnon was impersonating her. The skit lasted six minutes long, and the former presidential candidate played the role of a bartender that was serving McKinnon.
"Here's a person who's effecting change on a worldwide stage, and my job is doing voices," McKinnon told Rolling Stone in 2016 about meeting the former First Lady. "Why are we in the same room? This doesn't seem right, but there we were."
More Emmy awards might be in McKinnon’s future, though she continues to land big roles outside of “Saturday Night Live.” She had one of the lead roles in the 2016 reboot of “Ghostbuster.” McKinnon was in five movies in total last year with roles in “Finding Dory,” “Masterminds” and “Office Christmas Party.”
McKinnon beat out co-stars Leslie Jones and Vanessa Bayer for the award. “Saturday Night Live” won the award for best variety sketch series later in the night.
