KEY POINTS

  • Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony at Boston's MGM Music Hall Friday night
  • The Princess of Wales rented a bright green Solace London dress for the green carpet event
  • Middleton accessorized with a pair of drop earrings and Princess Diana's iconic emerald-and-diamond choker

Kate Middleton channeled her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, at the 2022 Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts, Friday night.

The Princess of Wales turned heads in a bright green gown with a bateau neckline and long sleeves when she and her husband Prince William arrived at the MGM Music Hall for the second annual awards ceremony for the Prince of Wales' environmental initiative.

As the Earthshot Prize Awards has sustainable fashion theme guidelines, Middleton rented her off-the-shoulder Solace London "Sabina" dress ($525) from rental platform Hurr, Page Six reported.

She styled her hair in soft waves and accessorized with drop earrings and Princess Diana's iconic emerald-and-diamond choker necklace. She completed her look with a pair of sparkling gold heels.

The sparkling emerald choker hasn't been seen since Princess Diana wore it. The piece was created "by redesigning an emerald and diamond necklace that was presented to [Queen] Mary during the Delhi Durbar in 1911," according to The Court Jeweller.

It was given to Princess Diana by Queen Elizabeth II after her wedding to then-Prince Charles. The late princess famously wore the choker as a headband in 1985 during her tour of Australia alongside Charles.

But Middleton's overall look at Friday's awards ceremony was reminiscent of a bright green gown her mother-in-law wore along with the choker during a Malaysian state visit in 1993, based on a photo provided by Page Six.

A number of royal fans praised Middleton's choice of outfit for the night, with many calling it "sophisticated," "amazing" and "appropriate."

"Always appropriate and tasteful," one Twitter user commented. Another added, "Wow Princess Catherine, absolutely stunning."

"Not the dress I was expecting at all, but what a statement to make! Knocking it out of the park at Earthshot Boston 2022!" a third user wrote.

"I absolutely ABSOLUTELY adore Catherine, Princess of Wales in green. And the neon green with the emerald choker is [kiss and heart emojis]," a different person opined.

Prince William, for his part, looked dapper in a velvet tuxedo jacket and black trousers.

The heir to the British throne launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 to incentivize environmental change and help repair the planet over the next decade. It was inspired by President John F. Kennedy's iconic "Moonshot," an ambitious 1961 mission to get a man on the moon within a decade.

The five Earthshot categories included: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean our Air, Revive our Oceans, Build a Waste-free World and Fix our Climate.

Five winners from around the globe received $1.2 million each at the awards ceremony.

"I believe that the Earthshot solutions you have seen this evening prove we can overcome our planet's greatest challenges. And by supporting and scaling them, we can change our future," the Prince of Wales said during the ceremony, according to Page Six.

He continued, "Alongside tonight's winners and finalists, and those to be discovered over the years to come, it's my hope the Earthshot legacy will continue to grow, helping our communities and our planet to thrive."
