Kate Middleton Criticized For Not Wearing A Black Gown For BAFTAs 2018

Kate Middleton received some negative feedback after she refused to wear a black gown to the 2018 BAFTAs.
The Duchess of Cambridge graced the BAFTAs red carpet in a forest green Jenny Packham gown with a black tie. Middleton showed off her baby bump in her loose and flowing gown that is tight-fitting around the stomach.
Most of the female celebrities and personalities who attended the event opted to wear black to support the Times Up and #MeToo campaigns which support women's rights. As a result, many were disappointed that the royal mom did not join in and show her support for the causes, with some questioning her sincerity in helping women.
"[Very] disappointed that Kate Middleton didn't wear BLACK in solidarity with other women. I guess she wanted to look different to commoners, the proletariat that pay taxes to support her lifestyle! Shameful!" JohnR EU posted on Twitter.
"Kate Middleton shuns #timesup black dress code, clearly not a woman’s woman! #EEBAFTAs," Twitter user Johanna wrote.
Imagine living in a world where "sexual assult is bad" is seen as a political statement. Shame on you kate and wills @KensingtonRoyal #BAFTAs #MeToo

1) no one is taking away the Duchess of C’s right to choose what to wear

2) criticising her for the choice to wear not-black is NOT abuse
3) being in solidarity with sexual assault and harassment victims should not be counted as a “political stance”#BAFTAs #TimesUp #metoo
What a shame she won't stand with us #baftas #MeToo #TimesUp #DuchessofCambridge pic.twitter.com/OBaCEMJat5

However, some also came to Middleton's defense by stating that the royal family does not get involved in political debates. However, others believe that supporting women's rights is not a political issue.
Disappointed in #KateMiddleton #DuchessofCambridge not wearing black to the #EEBAFTAs It’s not a political thing. Its a woman thing! #TimesUp #StandTogether

I know the Royals aren’t supposed to get involved with “protests” or anything… but would it really have been THAT bad for Kate Middleton to wear black??? #BAFTAs2018

Meanwhile, the black tie around the Duchess's waist also got some attention, with some speculating that it was her way of showing her support for the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns.
"To the people criticizing the Duchess for her decision not to wear #MeToo black, note the ribbon around her waist," Sarah Burr wrote. "She OBVIOUSLY supports the cause and did so tastefully within her role as a Royal. Stop trying to drag her through the mud."
She can’t be seen to be politically involved with any specific cause. Royals are seen to be impartial. However, kudos to her wearing her black bow across the middle and wearing a dark a colour as possible. #Feminazis #BAFTAS #MeToo https://t.co/LMp23BuXfQ

Question for those criticizing the Duchess of Cambridge for not wearing black to the #BAFTAs . How does it help the #MeToo movement for women to judge what another woman chooses to wear? Must we be our own worst enemies?

I support all guests at @BAFTA choosing to wear black in support of #MeToo and #TimesUp . I also support the Duchess of Cambridge in choosing not to do so. Telling a pregnant women how to dress in any other situation would be seen as part of the problem! #BAFTAs

They really are pathetic. Wearing black will make zero difference to the cause in my opinion! Anyway, you should be allowed to wear what the hell you like. #metoo #TimesUp #BAFTAs https://t.co/ZDn3V353Gw

A number also called Middleton's critics to stop slamming the royal simply for not wearing black to the event. According to Mary Novaria, it doesn't help the women's movement to judge someone due to the color of her dress.
Meanwhile, Jamie Samhan created a poll asking her followers about Middleton's green dress at the BAFTAs. She asked them if the Duchess of Cambridge should have worn a black dress to support the women's movements.
Thoughts on Kate's green dress at the #BAFTAs. Do you think she should have worn black in support of #metoo?

As of this writing, the majority of the respondents said that it was not necessary for Middleton to wear black to show her support for women's rights.
Meanwhile, Middleton is an active advocate of mental health. As a mom herself, she is also campaigning for maternal mental health.
In fact, in January, the Duchess visited the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King's College London. During the visit, she talked with the doctors about the challenges in dealing with maternal mental health issues like postpartum depression.
