Kate Middleton was strong and wise enough to deal with royal pressure when she was still Prince William's girlfriend.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dated for almost a decade before they got engaged. They also started as friends before they became lovers.

In Robert Jobson’s 2006 book “William’s Princess,” the royal expert detailed how Prince William and Middleton’s relationship struggled after their graduation.

“Kate and William had been back in the real world barely five months and already it seemed to be closing in on them,” Jobson wrote.

Prince William was aware that Prince Charles was uncomfortable with his proactive approach to the press. Thus, it caused friction between the father and son. Moreover, it was not the only area in his life that was out of balance.

“This period of adjustment was proving tense and uncertain as far as his continued relationship with Kate was concerned,” Jobson wrote. “The affair had been careering along at such a clip that it seemed perilously close to going off the rails. No longer restricted by full time [at university], it was always bound to be a testing period for the young lovers.”

At the time, Prince William was seeing less of Middleton. The Duchess of Cambridge didn’t want to appear needy again, so she did her best to let it pass even if it was not easy for her. Jobson added that it was a time of negotiation for Middleton, she was working out what space in Prince William’s life she could expect to occupy and how much she would have grin and bear.

“William’s duties, his demanding family, and the looming prospect of Sandhurst all conspired to squeeze her out in so many ways,” Jobson added. “Kate would have to be strong enough, and wise enough, to recognise how much of her boyfriend she could claw back for herself and she would simply have to make do with what was left.”

Meanwhile, Kensington Palace defended Middleton from the controversial Tatler report. The palace noted that the claims that the duchess was exhausted and feeling trapped were not true.

Another source claims that Middleton is more than happy to step up. In fact, she wants year 2020 to be a pivotal year for her.
