She won’t be inheriting the title of Queen Consort for at least a few more years, but that doesn’t mean Kate Middleton isn’t already preparing for what her future role will entail—or that she is planning on sticking with every tradition.

In fact, according to the newest edition of Us Weekly, as the Duchess of Cambridge continues adjusting her mindset to prepare for her future role, she is also making plans to bring the monarchy more into modern times as well.

“Kate may change some of the outdated royal rules when she becomes queen [consort],” a source told the magazine. “She’s also been very present on social media and has gotten comfortable doing TV interviews and virtual chats. She’s keen to continue that in the future as well.”

One way the source indicates Middleton plans to change the rules is by having a more active role when it comes to meeting with the public and speaking with them at events, something she has been doing as a Duchess, and that traditionally hasn’t always been done by those serving in Consort roles.

Of course, while changing some of those rules may be one of the things on Middleton’s agenda, it doesn’t mean she’s always followed every rule that has been set in the Monarchy or even ones favored by Queen Elizabeth. In fact, when it comes to traditions with fashion, beauty and lifestyle, the Duchess has often found subtle ways to challenge and outright break them.

From reportedly wearing diamond jewelry prior to the evening hours or sporting colorful nail polish on her toenails, Middleton has often attempted to put her own spin on some of the traditional rules and has even gotten Prince William to put his foot down on some of the outdated rules as well.

One rule the couple is known to often break involves one which states that heirs to the throne cannot travel together by plane because of the risk of accidents or emergencies. The rule applies to Prince William and the couple’s eldest son, Prince George, who is technically not supposed to travel with his father. However, the entire royal family—including George’s younger siblings, Charlotte and Louis, always travel together on the same flights.
