Tension was evident during Kate Middleton’s shared carriage ride with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

On Saturday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined the Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Cornwall’s carriage for Trooping the Colour parade. Although the four royals were all smiles, body language expert Judi James saw the tension surrounding the Middleton, Prince Harry and Markle.

“Meghan’s return to front line duty involved what looked at times like a rather tense, but also smiling carriage ride down the Mall with Harry, Camilla and Kate,” James said.

The expert also pointed out how Middleton’s body language was showing signs of “inner tension.”

“Kate’s posture was slightly self-diminished, curled in slightly and with her arms pulled into her sides and her hands clasped in her lap,” James explained.

“Kate’s non-verbal confidence signals have been increasing recently but the lack of relaxed splaying here suggested inner tension.”

According to James, of the four royals, Markle looked the happiest and more relaxed with her cheek-rounding, congruent-looking smile and eye contact as she chatted with Middleton.

Prince Harry wore a slightly bland and enigmatic facial expression but later on relaxed as he was seen grinning and nodding. On the other hand, the Duchess of Cornwall sat upright with the most regal-looking high wave.

Middleton always sits with Camilla during the Trooping the Colour parade because their husbands have ceremonial roles and usually join the parade on horseback. Prince William is the Colonel of the Irish Guards while Prince Charles is the Colonel of the Welsh Guards.

Aside from the two, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and Prince Edward also have ceremonial roles. Prince Andrew is the Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, Princess Anne is the Colonel of the Blues and Royals and Prince Edward is the Colonel of the Scots Guards. All five of them report to the Colonel-in-Chief, Queen Elizabeth II.

Middleton and Camilla are the future queen consorts, so it also makes sense if they are always seated next to each other at the said event.
