Kate Winslet Criticized For Calling Woody Allen A Woman 'On Some Level'

Even as director Woody Allen is surrounded by a number of controversies, actress Kate Winslet was all praises for him when she said she believes he is “on some level a woman.” However, the Oscar-winning actress was criticized for supporting the famed director at a time when he was slammed by his adopted daughter for sexually abusing her when she was a kid.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Winslet jokingly said about Allen: “I think on some level Woody is a woman.”

“I just think he's very in touch with that side of himself. He understands the female characters he creates exceptionally well. His female characters are always so rich and large and honest in terms of how they're feeling and he just knows how to write dialogue for them to communicate all that,” she added on a serious note.

Winslet, who starred in Allen’s crime-drama film “Wonder Wheel,” earned a lot of critics including Allen’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, who had accused the famed director of sexually abusing her when she was seven years old.

Farrow even penned an Op-Ed in the Los Angeles Times criticizing the director for his actions and slamming actresses like Winslet and Greta Gerwig for standing by Allen, despite thousands of women pledging their support for the #MeToo movement against sexual assault. In her editorial, Farrow even compared the actions of Allen to disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Expressing her anger, Farrow wrote when Weinstein was held accountable for his actions, why wasn't Allen?

“I have long maintained that when I was seven years old, Woody Allen led me into an attic, away from the babysitters who had been instructed never to leave me alone with him. He then sexually assaulted me. I told the truth to the authorities then, and I have been telling it, unaltered, for more than 20 years. Why is it that Harvey Weinstein and other accused celebrities have been cast out by Hollywood, while Allen recently secured a multimillion-dollar distribution deal with Amazon, greenlit by former Amazon Studios executive Roy Price before he was suspended over sexual misconduct allegations?” she wrote.

“The system worked for Harvey Weinstein for decades. It works for Woody Allen still,” she further added.

Last month, Winslet was asked about Farrow’s allegations against Allen, to which the Oscar-winning actress said: “At the end of the day, you look at the facts. He’s an 81-year-old man who went through a two-year court case.”

“As far as I know, he wasn’t convicted of anything. I’m an actor; he’s a director. I don’t know his family. I’ve heard and read exactly what you’ve heard and read. I know as much as you do. That’s all I can say,” she added.

The 82-year-old director always denied the allegations against him.

“Of course I did not molest Dylan. I loved her and hope one day she will grasp how she has been cheated out of having a loving father and exploited by a mother more interested in her own festering anger than her daughter's well-being," he wrote in 2014.
