Katharine Mcphee Talks Life After Divorce, Dating And Getting Married Too Young
Katharine Mcphee finds it hard to be single but also said it’s difficult to date other people.
That’s what she conveyed while speaking to Ocean Drive in their September issue. Mcphee, 29, got married to Nick Cokas, 47, in February 2008. They split in 2014 and their divorce was finalized two years later.
The break up came one year after the “American Idol” alum was seen kissing “Smash” director Michael Morris. Afterward, there were rumors that the two started dating, according to a source from People magazine, but they never confirmed it. “Katharine is no longer seeing Michael,” said the insider.
Then in September 2014, Mcphee began dating her "Scorpion" co-star Elyes Gabel after they were spotted kissing each other on set in between takes. They were also seen sharing a kiss on a Los Angeles beach around that time as well. In July, however, the couple decided to go their seperate ways but remain good friends.
“I have not been single for very much of my life,” she stated. “I don’t really understand how to date or how to be single. As soon as I know that I don’t really want to be in a relationship with somebody, I don’t really keep it going. I’m trying to date in a way that doesn’t lock me down.”
“There is still a certain level of attachment with the prior relationship that I was in,” added Mcphee. “So emotionally, to be suddenly dating other people is not as easy. People say ‘You just need to hook up with a bunch of people,’ but I am more of an in-love kind of person. I want to be in love with one person.”
The actress and singer didn’t touch on the kissing scandal during the interview, nor did she provide any details on her split with Cokas. According to TMZ, her ex-husband received spousal support in the divorce and got to keep 50 percent of the money Mcphee made from music during the marriage. In addition, E! reported that Cokas receives $33,333 a month in alimony payments.
In 2013, The “Had It All” singer admitted that she didn’t want a family when she got married, but didn’t say if that was a big factor in the split. “I once thought that by now I’d have lot’s of children, but actually I’m really enjoying being able to go from point A to point B, and the only worry I have is ‘Have my dogs been walked,’” she told Lucky magazine, which was captured by UsWeekly.
As far as her current single status, Mcphee said she’s really enjoying it and wish she would have been free to date earlier. “I got married really young and then divorced and in the last couple of years I felt like ‘Wow, this is what I should have been doing when I was 20 instead of planning a wedding,’ but I don’t have any regrets.”
