Kathie Lee Gifford, Martin Short Have Awkward Moment On 'Today Show'; Gifford References Shorts Dead Wife [VIDEO]
On the May 31 episode of The Today Show with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, Martin Short made an appearance in an effort to promote his latest film, Madagascar 3.
The friendly interview was all fun and laughs until Kathie Lee, the wife of former New York Giants running back Frank Gifford, decided to touch on a topic besides the latest Martin Short movie release.
About midway through the interview, Gifford asked Short about his wife, who had died of ovarian cancer in 2010.
The Today Show co-host was apparently unaware of this because she goes on to refer to Short's relationship with his wife as if is still alive and well.
He and Nancy have got one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business, Gifford said in reference to Martin Short and his late wife Nancy.
The oblivious co-host goes on to ask short how long they have now been together.
Short, who is the voice behind Stefano in Madagascar 3, handles the question with total grace professionalism.
We uh . . . married 36 years, Short responds.
But your still like in love! Lee Gifford suggests.
The seasoned actor goes on to tell the ladies that he is still madly in love and suggests that to be the case because he's cute.
Despite Gifford's recent slip up on national television, she has already taken to twitter in an effort to apologize to Martin Short and commend him for the way that he handles the situation.
I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful, Gifford tweeted.
While the situation is making news headlines, Short's publicist has released a statement to The Daily News saying, Marty never even addressed it with us, he just moved right along. We appreciate if everyone else might do the same so as not to make a huge deal about it either.
