  • The comedian faced backlash on social media over her comments

Kathy Griffin did not mince her words when asked for her opinion of Johnny Depp after the actor won his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

During Thursday's call-in episode of CNN political analyst Brian Karem's "Just Ask the Question" podcast, the comedian, who is a friend of Heard's, took aim at Depp's appearance, calling the actor an "orange fat bloated boozebag," TMZ reported.

"These Johnny Depp stans that are talking about this trial, and yet they refuse to show pictures of what he looks like now, which is a big orange fat bloated boozebag. He looks like Donald Trump with a ponytail," Griffin said in a clip from the episode shared online by a Twitter user.

She continued, "And so they keep sticking up for him and being like, 'Amber is taking down Johnny! He's so gorgeous and dreamy!' I'm like, OK, he talks like Kanye when Kanye had his jaw wired. He has a fake accent like when Madonna turned British. So, you know, who are we kidding here?"

The comedian also said she "completely" believes Heard's allegations of domestic abuse and suggested that some of Depp's witnesses may have been coerced or felt pressure to make statements in support of him.

Griffin faced backlash on social media over her comments, particularly her remarks about Depp's appearance.

"I'm sorry, but how are somebody's looks relevant to a court proceeding, which deals with facts and evidence?" one Twitter user commented.

"What a disgusting and ignorant take @kathygriffin," Andy Signore tweeted. "Who cares what he looks like?! You claim he used his power, but Johnny Depp had as much power as you did these past few years. He didn’t force anything. He won because it was the truth. The tapes and her inconsistencies proved it."

Another Twitter user wrote: "There is having an opinion, then there is just abuse. Why do people think they need to insult others to elevate themselves? Her words against Johnny Depp are disgusting and do nothing to further women’s rights. Do better, Kathy Griffin."

"Kathy, you’ve really gone and done it now. You’ve managed to find a new low when it seemed like you were already at the bottom," a fourth person commented.

Other users said they agreed with Griffin's remarks, even if some don't necessarily approve of making fun of someone's appearance publicly.

"Thank you, and you are 100% correct," one person wrote of Griffin.

"I actually don't disagree with some of what she said. People should post pics of him as he is now. What does a pirate have to do with this trial?" another user wrote, referring to the photos of Depp as his "Pirates of the Caribbean" character Jack Sparrow. "People want to keep that image of a character but not accept the ugly truth."

"I think it's more (hard drugs), not sure about booze. I think he even admitted to using crack. That's pretty sad. It shows in his appearance," a third person commented.

"@kathygriffin I love you, and I don't disagree with you. But can we maybe leave physical appearances out of the debate and talk about the real issues?" one fan tweeted.

Griffin previously expressed her support for Heard before the former couple's defamation trial began in Fairfax, Virginia, in April.

When Heard announced on April 10 that she is going offline on social media for the trial, the comedian commented on her Twitter post: "Oh Doll, I’m thinking about you and sending all the love."

On Wednesday, a jury found that Heard defamed Depp in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed about surviving domestic abuse and awarded the actor $10.35 million in damages.

Heard was also awarded $2 million in damages as she partially won her countersuit over comments made by Depp's former lawyer, who called her abuse allegations a hoax.

Heard's lawyer Elaine Bredehoft said her client plans to appeal the verdict — and has "excellent grounds" for it.
