Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise divorced because the actress feared she would lose their daughter Suri Cruise to Scientology, a religion the “Mission Impossible” star follows, according to a recent report. Holmes was scared that she would end up like Cruise’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman, whose adopted daughter Bella was reportedly disowned after Kidman moved away from Scientology, Ron Miscavige, the father of Scientology leader David Miscavige, told Daily Mail.

Scientologists cut off contact with family members who abandon the Church of Scientology, Ron told Daily Mail. Ron said that the church’s staff members, known as Sea Org, moved in with Cruise and Holmes to make sure Cruise was being looked after properly.

“That didn’t sit so well with Katie, of course, and it hurt the marriage,” he told Daily Mail. “She and Tom had big differences about the way life should be lived.”

“It’s a toxic policy that ruins lives,” said Ron reportedly said. “Katie just didn’t want that to happen, so she left.”

Ron further said that Cruise looks up to David, even basing his decisions on David’s. Holmes feared that Suri might one day “disconnect” from her mother if they raised her as a Scientologist and if the actress left the church.

“The big issue really was raising Suri as a Scientologist,” Ron said, according to the report. “If that happened, some day it was a possibility that she would disconnect from Katie.”

Cruise is reportedly planning to move to the 100-acre Scientology headquarters in the United Kingdom after selling his London house to spread the religion to Europe. Recent renovations at that U.K. estate are reported to be worth $16 million.
