Katy Perry admitted to Zooey Deschanel that she used to pretend to be her to get into clubs before she became famous.
Perry, 36, made this revelation during her Instagram Live chat with Deschanel, 40, Monday. During their conversation, the singer said she used to claim she was Deschanel when she was an aspiring singer in Los Angeles as people would compliment her and tell her she looked like the actress.
"When I moved to L.A. maybe 18 years ago... I was pretty much a nobody, and you were like just getting so huge at that time, it was like Zooey Deschanel ran the world. In that moment, I was so complimented to look like you," Perry said.
"But I have to admit something to you," she continued. "When I first got to L.A., I went to the club. A lot. And I wanted to get into the club, but I had no money, I had no clout, I had nothing, and sometimes I would pose as you to get into the club."
Deschanel then left shocked Perry when she revealed that she was aware of the singer using their similar looks to her advantage.
The actress explained that she had heard stories from pals who claimed they saw her in clubs when she wasn't there. Several also told her that there was a girl named Katy who looked like her around this time.
"Well, I know this," Deschanel said. "People were like 'I saw you!' But I'm such a goody two-shoes, and people kept going like, 'I saw you out! I made eye contact with you!' Then everybody kept telling me about you, 'This girl Katy, she looks just like you,' and I'm like, 'Who is this Katy?'"
Deschanel then recalled her first meeting with Perry, saying, "And then when I first met you, I was so relieved because you're so pretty, and I was like, 'Oh, thank God. She's so pretty.'"
Perry also confessed that she was "tuned up to 11" and was very wild when she was in clubs at the time. She apologized to Deschanel for misrepresenting her. The "Yes Man" star just smiled and said the confusion was a compliment.
Perry and Deschanel held the virtual chat hours after the singer released her new music video for "Not the End of the World." The video stars Deschanel, whom extraterrestrial characters kidnap thinking she was Perry.
Meanwhile, Perry officially became a mom in August after welcoming her daughter with her fiancé, Orlando Bloom.
