She may be known as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's ex-wife, but Kerry Kennedy’s career and fortune is not defined by her ex-husband and her “American royalty” surname.

Kerry Kennedy's net worth is valued at $10 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, double that of Gov. Cuomo's $5 million fortune. Kennedy is the seventh child of Robert Francis Kennedy (RFK) and Ethel Skakel. RFK is the younger brother of former U.S. president John F. Kennedy. She married Cuomo in 1990 and their divorce was finalized in 2005.

Kennedy started her human rights advocacies as a young adult, but was also invested in sports like her siblings. She went to Brown University and Boston College Law School.

Kennedy was heavily involved in the establishment of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights where she is still president and engaged with causes in Haiti, Gaza and El Salvador, among others. She also continues to serve on advisory committees of different organizations and is a recipient of many humanitarian awards, Human Rights First notes.

As an author, Kennedy also earns from the books she's written, including “Robert F. Kennedy: Ripples of Hope” and “Speak to the Power of Truth.” A devout Catholic, Kennedy is also the editor of “Being Catholic Now.”

While her career flourished in the 90s, her marriage was strained. The stresses of marriage, parenting and Cuomo's political career led to the couple's eventual split, Vanity Fair reported. Andrew Cuomo is now the second-highest paid governor in the U.S.

The two are parents to three girls -- Michaela, and twins Mariah and Cara. All of their children are also passionate activists, according to The Oprah Magazine.
