Until the Los Angeles Clippers signed Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the summer’s free agency belonged to Brooklyn Nets after they managed to land Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Nets general manager Sean Marks has revealed the reason Durant chose them over other suitors like the New York Knicks and his former employers Golden State Warriors.

Durant was the most sought after player heading into free agency this summer but the Achilles injury he suffered during the NBA Finals did make a few teams apprehensive. It was still one of the most highly anticipated decisions and Marks confirmed that even they found out about his decision to join the Nets when he made the announcement on The Boardroom’s Instagram account.

The Nets offered the injured small forward a max contract and Marks revealed that Durant admitted after the move that the reason for his switch was he loved the system and the style of play employed by the Brooklyn franchise, who made the playoffs last season.

"I love the system. I love how you guys play. I see how hard you guys play. ... You were never out of games. We could never take you guys lightly,” Marks said talking about Durant’s admission on WFAN on Tuesday.

“What we knew was we were either getting a teleconference call with Kevin that night or we were going to potentially get a meeting," Marks said. "We'd seen some media reports earlier in the day that Kevin had crossed several teams off his list, and we were still [being considered]. And those reports were there for everybody to read. And then when Kevin posted it on The Boardroom Instagram site, that was news to all of us in the office."

Marks also made it clear that the team will not rush Durant’s return from the Achilles injury which is expected to see him miss the entire 2019-20 campaign. He said the decision to return will be entirely on the two-time NBA Finals MVP.

"I have no idea. We're certainly not going to rush him back. There's going to be absolutely none of that. We have far too much invested in him, and we owe it to Kevin to get him back to 100 percent,” Marks added. "This is entirely going to be a Kevin Durant decision.”
