KEY POINTS

  • Kevin Duran tested positive for COVID-19
  • He is on his way to recovery from a ruptured achilles tendon
  • KD received $35 million from endorsements last year

Kevin Durant’s net worth is $170 million. He is set to return next season but the future remains uncertain after the NBA suspended its season indefinitely.

The former finals MVP teamed up with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in the Golden State Warriors and eventually won two championships. In order to retain the superstar core of the team, Durant has been taking pay cuts to accommodate roster upgrades, but despite that he still received a substantial amount from endorsement deals.

The sweet-shooting power forward fetched $35 million from endorsements last year. Per Forbes, Durant represented brands such as Alaska Air Group, Google and Nike. His 10-year deal with Nike is worth $275 million. This is on top of the $164 million deal to suit up for the Brooklyn Nets. Even without stepping on the court this season, KD will still make $70 million, according to Bleacher Report.

The 31-year-old also has investments in numerous companies such as Postmates and Acorns. In 2018, the 10-time All-Star pledged $10 million for the College Track academic program in Maryland via his Kevin Durant Charity Foundation. As one of the bright stars in the NBA, Durant is popular all over the world.

His decision to come to Golden State drew flak among fans but no one can question his business savvy moves. Outside basketball, he founded the Thirty Five Ventures which makes investments and produces documentaries. Soon enough, he was rubbing elbows with tech titans at Silicon Valley and he made investments in startups such as Coinbase, Robinhood, Caffeine TV, Imperfect Food and Lime scooters. Durant thought about entering real estate and oil investments but soon realized it was not his cup of tea.

Durant suffered an injury in the last NBA finals against the Toronto Raptors. A ruptured Achilles tendon requires six to eight months of recovery, which meant he would likely miss out playing for the Brooklyn Nets which he joined in July 2019.

There were speculations he could return this season to salvage the Nets’ campaign but all went down the drain after the COVID-19 scare forced Commissioner Adam Silver to stop all games. Unfortunately for KD, he tested positive for the coronavirus, along with four other teammates in Brooklyn. This brings the tally of COVID-19 positive among NBA players to seven. Earlier, Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert were found to have the disease.

With the NBA season suspended indefinitely, Durant’s return to NBA court seems to be far away now. Coupled with his health status amid an injury comeback, it might take awhile before fans can see him playing again.
