Kevin McCarthy Threatens Democrats' Committee Assignments If He Becomes House Speaker In 2023
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R- Calif., said he would strip committee assignments from high-profile Democrats if Republicans win back the House in the 2022 midterms.
McCarthy says he will attempt to remove Reps. Adam Schiff, D- Calif., and Eric Swalwell, D- Calif., from the House intelligence committee and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D- Minn., from the foreign affairs committee if he becomes House Speaker.
McCarthy said his plan is an effort to retaliate against current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for stripping Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R- Ga., and Paul Gosar, R- Ariz., from their assignments for inciting political violence.
“The Democrats have created a new thing where they’re picking and choosing who can be on committees. Never in the history [of Congress] have you had the majority tell the minority who can be on a committee,” McCarthy said in an interview with Breitbart.
Removing a lawmaker from a committee assignment would require a majority vote, an idea that Rep. Mike Turner, R- Ohio., said he would not support.
McCarthy said Omar should not be serving on foreign affairs for stances she has taken against the Israeli government. He also criticized Schiff for using a fake dossier that alleged Trump had ties to the Russian government.
“You look at Adam Schiff — he should not be serving on Intel when he has openly, knowingly now used a fake dossier, lied to the American public in the process and doesn’t have any ill will [and] says he wants to continue to do it,” McCarthy said.
Lauren French, a spokesperson for Schiff, responded to McCarthy's threat by saying, "it is always difficult to take Kevin McCarthy seriously."
