  • Keyontae Johnson is responding well after being placed in an induced coma
  • Johnson still under observation after collapsing in a basketball game
  • Doctors are still figuring out if his case is linked to COVID-19

Folks keeping track of the latest update on Florida Gators basketball player Keyontae Johnson are in for some good news.

The 21-year-old college player has woken up from a medically-induced coma and is responding well.

The 6-foot-5 player is awake and breathing on his own. According to an update from Shams Charania of The Athletic, Johnson is now able to talk and has done so with his parents and attending physicians.

Many are rooting for the safe recovery of the Gators junior player who shockingly collapsed in a game against the Florida State Seminoles.

NBA players like Trae Young and Tobias Harris reacted to Charania’s tweet about Johnson, apparently monitoring his condition.

Johnson was coming out of a timeout with his teammates when he suddenly fell to the floor somewhere near center court. He was immediately attended to, but the terrifying scene was something that left players in shock and tears.

Johnson was coming off a big alley-oop play courtesy of an assist from Tyree Appleby. He was seen celebrating with other players before heading to the bench when the timeout was called.

The Gators led at that point, 11-3. However, things were never the same as Florida opted to play on despite what had happened to Johnson. They lost 83-71 to extend their dominance over the rivals.

Johnson waking up from the coma is a sigh of relief. However, it has yet to be established if his case is COVID-19 related.

In the summer, Johnson was reportedly among the cagers who tested positive for the coronavirus.

Johnson is expected to remain under observation as specialists try to figure out the reason behind his sudden collapse on the floor.

There are multiple general reasons as to why Johnson may have collapsed. This includes dehydration to heart-related issues such as hypertrophic and myocarditis, Fortune reported.
