KEY POINTS

  • Several celebrities living in southern California were issued "notices of exceedance" by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District
  • The notices stated they had surpassed 150% of their monthly water budget at least four times since a drought emergency was declared
  • Sylvester Stallone, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Hart were among those issued notices

Kim Kardashian and her sister Kourtney Kardashian are among the celebrities accused of violating local water restrictions in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, California, amid the ongoing drought in the state, according to a report.

According to documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times from the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, Kim, 41, and Kourtney, 43, were among the 2,000 customers who recently were issued "notices of exceedance" stating that they had surpassed 150% of their monthly water budget at least four times since a drought emergency was announced by the agency last year. The notices were sent out in May and June.

"Customers are expected to adhere to the water use reductions and water conservation measures that are in place due to this emergency," the notices stated.

The properties of those who were issued notices are required to install flow restrictor devices, which can reduce showers to a trickle and silence lawn sprinklers, the report said.

According to the outlet, records showed that the Skims founder's properties that received notices were her Hidden Hills home and its adjacent lot, which together surpassed their June budget by about 232,000 gallons.

Kourtney's 1.86-acre property in nearby Calabasas exceeded its budget by about 101,000 gallons for the month of June, according to records seen by the Los Angeles Times.

Water budgets for properties are determined by a combination of factors, including the number of residents and the amount of irrigated land, Las Virgenes spokesman Mike McNutt told the outlet.

Representatives for the Kardashian family did not respond to the outlet's requests for comment.

In addition to the reality stars, other big names who also received the notices include Sylvester Stallone, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Hart, according to the Times.

On June 1, Las Virgenes enforced severe "stage 3" restrictions in a bid to reduce water consumption by at least 50% amid a water shortage emergency. As part of the restrictions, residents were limited to one day a week for outdoor watering.

McNutt told the Times that he hopes to see celebrities set a good example for others and reduce their water usage.

"People listen to you, people look at you, people value what you do... We need you to step up to the plate, to be examples and to be leaders so that other people will follow," he said. "That is the most critical thing that anybody in that bracket, or that has those resources, can do to influence and help with other people's behavior modifications."

But despite thousands of homes still exceeding their monthly water consumption budget, McNutt said there has already been a significant reduction in water usage among its customers compared to the last drought.

The overall savings for June were about 37% more than the same month in 2020, the year the drought began.

In June last year, Las Virgenes residents used about 261 gallons per person per day, but the average daily residential use was down to 170 gallons by this June.
