Kirstie Alley Says Personalities Facing Sexual Harassment Allegations Should Confront Accusers
Hot off the heels of Matt Lauer’s firing from NBC News amid sexual misconduct accusations, actress Kirstie Alley has given her two cents on the sexual harassment and abuse allegations that are growing in number in Hollywood lately. The comedienne finds it unfair when the personalities who are being accused of sexual misconduct get fired without proof or a trial.
On Wednesday, the 66-year-old funnylady took to Twitter to voice out her opinion on what’s happening to Hollywood at present. “What the hell is happening?” she wrote, “We now live in a country where people lose their jobs when accused of something without proof or trial or in some cases w anonymous accusers?”
Alley then went on to call out the people being accused of sexual harassment and abuse for not having the guts to confront their accusers. According to her, the scenario right now actually hurts the “real victims of abuse” and the “innocent people.”
Many have since criticized Alley’s opinion on the matter. “In what state does an employer need a judge or jury to tell them who they can fire? ‘Person accused of sexual harassment’ is not a protected class,” one wrote. “Ignorant statements like this are the reason so many women don’t come forward,” another commented.
After obtaining a lot of harsh responses from followers and the general Twitter users, Alley decided to preach about righteousness, according to Us Weekly. The “Cheers” alum wrote: “Ok on another note..there is SO much GOOD IN THIS WORLD ..And I just hope all this chaos doesn’t occlude the GOODNESS around us.. take justice against he bad and REVEL IN THE GOOD.”
Alley also denied that she called out sexual harassment accusers to show her support for Lauer. “I don’t believe I’ve ever mentioned Matt L. in ANY tweet ever,” she pointed out in a follow-up tweet. Interestingly, Alley isn’t the only one who spoke out seemingly in support of the controversial television journalist. Talk show host Geraldo Rivera also took to Twitter to back Lauer from the allegations.
“Sad about @MLauer great guy, highly skilled & empathetic w guests & a real gentlemen to my family & me,” the 74-year-old attorney tweeted. “News is a flirty business & it seems like current epidemic of #SexHarassmentAllegations may be criminalizing courtship & conflating it w predation.”
Lauer was fired from “Today” on Wednesday after an employee filed a complaint about “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.” Following the announcement, Variety published a story containing more sexual harassment allegations against the journalist from three unnamed women.
