The New York Knicks are hoping to win the Draft Lottery in Chicago next week in the hope of landing the No.1 pick for the 2019 NBA Draft later in the year. They have even decided the player they want if they are handed the top pick this summer – it is very predictable, it is the country’s top prospect Zion Williamson.

Knicks coach David Fizdale had no qualms about revealing who they will pick if they win the Draft Lottery as Williamson will be the top pick for whichever team land draws the No.1 pick at the lottery. Williamson was the talk of college basketball this season having impressed for the Duke Blue Devils in the regular season and the NCAA Tournament.

“If we win the lottery, do we know who we’re taking?” asked Fizdale during the “Dan Patrick Show” Wednesday morning, as quoted on the New York Post. “Yes,” and then went on to laugh when the talk show host called for Williamson to be brought out.

Fizdale praised Williamson and Murray State’s Ja Morant, who is expected to be the No.2 pick at this year’s draft. He called them “electric players”, according to the Post. The Knicks are in the process of rebuilding their team after ending the 2018-19 season as the worst team in the NBA with a 17-65 record.

The New York franchise have a league-high $74 million in max salary cap space and they are expected to land two big free agents with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on top of their wish list. But the management has made it clear they will not spend for the sake of it and only sign the players who are committed to their cause.

Fizdale also refused to deny that the Knicks could trade their chance of landing the No.1 pick to the New Orleans Pelicans for Anthony Davis, especially since the team is desperate to bring in a top quality power forward.

“For us, our roster is so open from that standpoint, we can have a lot of things fit us right now,” the Knicks coach added. “Obviously, we always want the biggest talent.”

The Draft Lottery on May 14 will be followed by the NBA draft combine between May 15 and 19 in Chicago and Fizdale made it clear it was very important for the team to meet all the draft prospects, interview them and get their true stories face-to-face.

“Huge,” Fizdale said. “I want to know the true kid. I want to know who they are. I want to hear the truth from them. I want to hear honest answers. I want to hear the raw. We do so much background on these guys, and so when we start getting into their background, you can ask pointed questions to get into the character of the kid, type of worker they are, how hungry they are, what kind of leader they are. I like to hear that face to face.”
