Kristen Bell On ‘Veronica Mars’ Miniseries: ‘It’s Going To Happen’
While no deal has been made and no timeline is in place yet for a “Veronica Mars” miniseries, franchise star Kristen Bell recently assured fans that it’s going to happen.
“We are willing to put the effort in — I mean, if I have to do it as ‘Murder She Wrote’ at 80, we’re going to do it. It’s going to happen,” Bell told IndieWire and his “Veronica Mars” co-star Ryan Hansen, who was at the IndieWire offices to promote his new YouTube Red series, “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television.”
When asked about the potential revival of “Veronica Mars,” Hansen first said there were no official plans in the works. But in an attempt to give fans more details about the possible follow-up, the actor decided to call Bell during the interview to see if she had any updates.
Bell said that she and “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas are “sort of in constant contact” about when they can do it again. “There’s a lot of willingness and commitment to doing it again,” the actress said, before explaining why they think the revival should be a limited series.
“You can’t do two television shows at the same time,” said Bell who currently stars on NBC’s “The Good Place.” “So we’d have to do like a miniseries. [Plus, the] format works better as an episodic [series].”
During the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January, Thomas said (via TVLine) that he and Bell are figuring out some way to do a “six-episode ‘Veronica Mars’ mystery.” However, both of them are not sure if NBC will allow her to do the potential revival.
“When actors are on network shows, most standard contracts will give them outs for, like, one episode a year of guest-starring. But then there are also sometimes outs if you’re doing something that is non-competitive,” Thomas explained. “Would NBC consider a ‘Veronica Mars’ thing on, like, Netflix non-competitive? We have not figured that out yet.”
After three seasons, “Veronica Mars” was canceled by The CW in 2007. Seven years later, a “Veronica Mars” feature film, which was crowdfunded by fans, was released. For the potential revival, however, Bell — who played the title role in the franchise — told TVLine in 2016 that they won’t be asking fans to “to pony up for anything.”
“I mean we are incredibly appreciative that that happened,” Bell said. “But I think the most respective thing to do this time is say, ‘Guess what all networks and internet platforms, we’ve proven our worth let’s not ask them to pre-sell all their tickets, let’s just give them something that you know they’re hungry for.”
