The recent release of The Avengers means that summer blockbuster season is here! Films like Battleship and Prometheus will no doubt draw actions fans to the theaters but there's one film that will appeal to male and female audiences alike. Snow White and the Huntsman offers an inventive approach to the story we all know and love. It stars such notable Hollywood wonders as Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth. Set to open on June 1st, the film has been generating some serious buzz. Here are five tings to know about the soon to be blockbuster.
1. It's Not Your Typical Fairy Tale: The film is a re-imagining of the classic Grimm tale, compiled in 1812, entitled Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It centers on Snow White's quest for retribution after the Evil Queen sends a huntsman, Eric, to murder her. The film is largely about the Eric's remorse for attempting to kill Snow White and his quest to turn her into a warrior. She is trained in sword fighting and learns to brave the Dark Forest in order to kill the Queen.
2. Kristen Stewart Wasn't the Director's First Choice: The studio initially planned to cast an unknown actress in the title role. Little known Australian soap star Bella Heathcote was rumored to have been considered as well as Like Crazy star Felicity Jones. Better known starlets, like Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) were also talked about during the casting process. Lilly Collins (who went on to play Snow White in Mirror Mirror) admitted that she auditioned for the role. Yet Kristen Stewart, who has a built in audience from the Twilight franchise was ultimately chosen.
3. A-List Hollywood Hunks Turned The Film Down: Well respected actors such as Johnny Depp were offered the role of the Huntsman. Depp turned it down while Viggo Mortensen was attached to star in the film for quite some time. When the actor and Universal Pictures failed to reach a deal, he dropped out of the film. At one point Hugh Jackman was approached to star but declined. Rumor has it Michael Fassbender and Warrior star Tom Hardy were considered. Eventually Thor star Chris Hemsworth was cast as the man who trains Snow White to obtain revenge.
4. It is One of Several Snow White Films: Snow White and the Huntsman marks the 19th film adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale. Earlier this year Mirror Mirror, which starred Lilly Collins and Julia Roberts, offered a comedic take on the story. However, the film debuted to poor reviews and unimpressive box office numbers.
5. A Sequel is Already in The Works: According to Deadline, Universal Pictures is extremely confident that Snow White and the Huntsman will be a massive hit with audiences. Reports have surfaced that the film's writer David Koepp is in talks to pen the film's sequel while director Rupert Sanders may make the film his next project. Last year Stewart told MTV that she'd be game for Huntsman follow-ups, saying: I've got stars in my eyes. I'm literally over the moon about what I'm doing right now. Yes, I would love to [do more 'Snow White' films].
