Kristen Stewart has revealed that her Oscar nomination for "Spencer" came as a real surprise.
For the first time, the "Twilight" actress has a chance to win the Oscar for best actress after being recognized for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s "Spencer."
While speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California, Sunday, Stewart said she was "truly astounded and unbelievably moved and touched and just stunned" by her Academy Award nomination, adding, "I love this movie."
She continued, "I just saw the director of 'Spencer' for the first time since we found out about the nomination, and just seeing the look on his face, seeing all the work we've put into this just evident in his smile, it made me so happy."
The "Charlie's Angels" star said she considers her Oscar nomination as the cherry on top of the sundae. She explained that she's enjoyed being a part of a movie that's generated a lot of awards season buzz, especially with regards to her performance.
"I've never even gotten kinda close," Stewart said of getting an Oscar nod in the past. "So this experience alone, even without the nomination, would have been really stunning."
In an interview on the "Variety Awards Circuit" podcast in November 2021, Stewart said she didn't "give a s—t" if her film portrayal does or doesn't earn an Oscar nomination or victory.
She pointed out that there are "so many" amazing movies and performances that don't get a lot of attention but acknowledged that the Academy Award nominations do somehow reflect "where we're at as a cumulative presence ... what we're looking at [and] what we care about."
However, Stewart said at the time that she appreciates being part of a film that has ignited such a large conversation and that she believes the discussions surrounding the movie "absolutely" speak to Princess Diana's "resonance."
In addition to her Oscar nod, Stewart also received a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination for best actress and a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a motion picture — drama for her performance in "Spencer."
For the 94th Academy Awards, Stewart will face off against Jessica Chastain ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye"), Olivia Colman ("The Lost Daughter"), Penelope Cruz ("Parallel Mothers") and Nicole Kidman ("Being the Ricardos") in the best actress category.
"I am speechless and humbled this morning. I am bowled over by this. I never thought in a thousand years I’d be in the company of these four incredible women," Stewart told ET in February when she first learned about her Oscar nomination.
The 94th Academy Awards will air on March 27 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
