Kurt Cobain died 18 years ago today at the young age of 27 by committing suicide. The Smells Like Teen Spirit singer was the front-man of the highly successful, groundbreaking band Nirvana.

Cobain struggled with drug addiction and depression for many years before his death. His wife, Courtney Love, said he attempted suicide twice before his final act.

When Cobain was found in his garage with a single gunshot wound to his head, he had been dead for a few days. A suicide note was found next to his body. A small controversy followed in the wake of his death, and some people believe he was murdered.

Cobain was only famous for a few years when he died, but he had already made a lasting impact on the music world. Upon his death, he joined other music icons in the 27 Club, a group of musicians colloquially named for the age at which its members died young.
