‘The L Word’ Revival To Air On Showtime? Not All Original Cast Members Will Return
“The L Word” revival may officially happen!
According to TV Line, Showtime is eyeing to revive the seminal lesbian-themed drama series that aired on the same network from 2004 to 2009. However, not all of the cast members from the first few seasons will return. According to Deadline, Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisa Hailey will reprise their respective roles as Bette, Shane and Alice. The trio will also serve as executive producers for the project.

However, since not all of the original cast members will be back, Bette, Shane and Alice will meet several new female characters. This also means that casting for “The L Word” revival will start in the coming months. Series creator Ilene Chaiken, who is currently involved in FOX’s “Empire,” will also serve as an EP in “The L Word” revival should Showtime give it an actual series order.
Rumors about the revival first came to light last month after Entertainment Weekly gathered the cast of “The L Word” for a mini reunion and photo shoot. While speaking with the publication, Chaiken revealed that she and the cast members always talk about a possible revival. “When we went off the air in 2009, I think a lot of people thought, ‘Okay, the baton is passed now, and there will be lots of shows that portray lesbian life.’ There’s really nothing. It feels like maybe it should come back,” she said.
Mary Kirshner, who played the role of Jenny, echoed Chaiken’s thoughts. “Another generation is beginning to watch the show, and there’s such a hole in terms of the landscape and what’s on television and what we’re capable of doing. There’s so many other stories to tell that it’s crazy that this show doesn’t exist,” she said.
Meanwhile, Hailey also said that there’s so much going on in the world today that she feels there’s a need for shows that are about community and acceptance. Kirshner added, “And the power of friendships.”
If “The L Word” revival will be a go, it could premiere on Showtime sometime next year.
