La Liga: Luis Suarez Scores A Brace, Breaks Decade-Old Cristiano Ronaldo Record [Watch]
KEY POINTS
- Luis Suarez moved from Barca to Atletico last summer
- He has scored 16 goals in 17 league matches this season
- Many believe Barca made a mistake by letting Suarez go
Luis Suarez continued an incredible run in his maiden season at Atletico Madrid as he broke Cristiano Ronaldo’s record with goals, he netted against Celta Vigo in the La Liga Monday.
Celta forward Santi Mina put the hosts 1-0 up early in the first half before Suarez netted an equalizer just before the half-time break at the Wanda Metropolitano. Five minutes into the second half, the Uruguayan playmaker struck again to hand Atletico a 2-1 lead. Even though the game ended in a draw, courtesy of Celta striker Facundo Ferreyra’s 89th-minute strike, Atletico remained well ahead in the title race.
Second and third-placed sides, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, after 21 matches are eight points behind Atletico Madrid, who still have a game in hand in the 2020-21 La Liga.
The brace against Celta Vigo took Suarez’s goal tally for Diego Simeone's men up to 16 in just 17 La Liga appearances since moving to the Spanish capital from Barcelona last summer. Apart from the league matches, Suarez has made four appearances in the Champions League as well but is yet to score for Atletico in the European tournament.
The former Liverpool striker was the first player to score 16 goals in his first 17 matches for a club in the Spanish top-flight league in the 21st century. The previous record was held by Ronaldo, who had scored 15 goals during his magnificent start at Real Madrid after moving there from Manchester United in 2009, according to OptaJose.
Ronaldo’s association with Real Madrid lasted for nine glorious years, where he scored 450 competitive goals in just 438 games, while he helped Los Blancos win many titles, including four Champions League trophies, two La Liga titles, and three FIFA Club World Cups.
Ahead of the 2018-19 season, Ronaldo’s move to Juventus marked the end of an era at Santiago Bernabeu.
Barcelona’s decision to allow Suarez to leave Camp Nou last summer has been termed a mistake by many as the 34-year-old striker has been in tremendous form so far. He is currently the leading goal scorer in La Liga in the underway campaign with 16 goals, three more than Barcelona skipper and his good friend Lionel Messi.
