Lady Gaga’s Stylist Brandon Maxwell To Launch Collection At New York Fashion Week
Brandon Maxwell will showcase his collection during New York Fashion Week in September. The stylist, whose most famous client is Lady Gaga, will launch a designer ready-to-wear collection for spring. The show date and format is not yet determined.
The stylist announced Monday that he is working on the collection and will present it under his own name, according to WWD.
Maxwell has considerable editorial styling experience. He met Gaga through Nicola Formichetti and worked with her as assistant stylist. He took over the reins from Formichetti in 2013. This year, Maxwell made the Hollywood Reporter’s prestigious list of the 25 most powerful stylists and posed for the cover with Gaga. He was responsible for her wardrobe on her “Cheek to Cheek” tour with Tony Bennett. He also styled her in the white gown and red gloves by Alaïa that she wore for her “Sound of Music” tribute at this year’s Academy Awards telecast.
He also has designed several custom looks for Lady Gaga. At a panel discussion hosted by Vulture in May, the stylist recalled his first design for the pop star. It was a blue velvet asymmetrical gown that he said Gaga loved.
Maxwell’s spring collection will consist of evening dresses with an emphasis on lean black suiting and gowns. “It’s important that it’s humble and taken seriously. I want women to want to wear the clothes, and I want people to say it was well-made and well thought out,” Maxwell said in a statement. He said he was excited to be fulfilling a lifelong dream of design, making clothes inspired by all the powerful women in his life. It will include designs from the classic to the avant-garde.
Maxwell will continue to style Lady Gaga, which he has described as a major, time-consuming job. However, Maxwell has styled editorials, campaigns and other projects, in spite of his busy schedule. He recently worked on a Nile Rodgers music video by Inez and Vinoodh, starring Karlie Kloss.
