LeBron James broke his silence on the uncertain status of the NBA season.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar aired his sentiments when he addressed the media in a conference call on Wednesday. He said that while he will cherish the “special moments” that he and his team had this year, he still would not have any “closure” if the season gets canceled completely.
"I don’t think I would be able to have any closure if we did not have an opportunity to finish the season,” said James, per Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times.
The Lakers had the best record in the Western Conference and were on their way to their first playoff appearance in seven years when the NBA suspended its season due to the Coronavirus.
Not even a month has passed since the announcement of the hiatus, but reports have already surfaced saying that the league is “angling” towards canceling the season, which has left some players, including James’ teammates, in denial mood.
Reading between the lines, it’s quite obvious that James is pertaining to the Lakers possibly missing the chance to win a title, especially that the odds for them this year were more favorable than it had been last year.
Lakers forward Jared Dudley mentioned the same as he feels the season is “looking more bleak by the day.”
“Even if we win the championship next year, that's not saying this would not have been our best chance. This would have been our best chance to win, even if you go into the future," he told Michael Lee of the Athletic, as he lamented that they could miss the opportunity of having a title run at full strength.
Another teammate of James, Danny Green, though, is keeping his optimism as he believes the NBA will resume sometime in May or later, saying that players are going to salvage the season “by any means necessary.”
“Most guys think that for sure we’re going to have a season, it’s just going to start later than we expected, and just trying to get the next season to be pushed back is not going to be as easy as people think it’s going to be,” said the Lakers starter. “So all the things that you hear in the news, seeing and reading, don’t believe it that the NBA season is canceled. That’s not true.”
