Lakers Trade Rumors: Deron Williams Interested in Joining Los Angeles
The biggest free agent in the NBA is considering joining the Lakers.
According to Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated, Deron Williams is interested in going to Los Angeles.
The point guard will be a free agent when the postseason comes to a close, and will likely be the most coveted player on the market. Williams played for the Nets this season after being traded from the Jazz a year and a half ago.
Williams has often been mentioned among the elite point guards in the league. He averaged 21 points and 8.7 assists per game on a bad Nets team.
Williams may wish to go to L.A., but he won't get there via free agency. The Lakers don't have enough money to sign him under the salary cap rules, and would have to acquire him through a sign-and-trade. If Williams indicates that he won't sign a long-term contract to stay with Brooklyn, they might be willing to make a deal.
The Lakers could offer either Pau Gasol or Andrew Bynum in a deal for the point guard. Williams would provide Los Angeles with one of the best point guards in the NBA, something they haven't had since Magic Johnson retired.
Lakers starting point guard Ramon Sessions has a $4.5 million player option for next season. He didn't play at the end of some playoff games, and Los Angeles would be willing to part with him.
Williams reportedly would like to stay with the Nets, but only if they improve their roster. The Mavericks are also reportedly on the list of teams he'd be willing to play for next year.
