When Lewis Hamilton set a Formula One record with his 92nd victory Sunday, McLaren driver Lando Norris was less than impressed. Two days later, the 20-year-old appears to be walking back the comments he made.

“I owe an apology,” Norris tweeted Tuesday. “I’ve been stupid and careless with some things I’ve said lately in media and interviews, and haven’t shown the respect I should have to certain people. I’m not that kind of person, so know I should apologise to them but also everyone reading/listening. Sorry.”

After finishing in 13th place at Sunday’s Portuguese Grand Prix, Norris gave more credit to Hamilton’s car than the driver himself.

“I'm just happy for him, nothing more,” Norris said, via ESPN. “It doesn't mean anything to me, really. He’s in a car which should win every race, basically.”

Legendary driver Michael Schumacher held the previous record with 91 wins.

The apology wasn't well-received by everyone, considering Norris didn't even mention Hamilton by name. Others believe there is no need for Norris to take back what he said.

Prior to his tweet, Norris also apologized for comments he made about Lance Stroll, with whom he had a collision during Sunday’s race. Norris criticized Stroll during a radio interview shortly after the race.
