'The Last Guardian' PS4 Price: Sony Permanently Drops Game To $39.99
Sony’s long-awaited The Last Guardian finally hit store shelves in December, but the company is taking a notable move to jumpstart sales. Sony has permanently dropped the price of the action-adventure PlayStation 4 game to $39.99, according to a report from Polygon.
The new $20 price drop for the game is effective immediately and has been reflected from retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.
Although price drops for games are common farther along into their sales lifespan, they’re rare for titles released as recently as The Last Guardian. The game was only released Dec. 6 last year and has been on store shelves for less than three months. While sales have been steady for the title, they’ve also been modest. As GamesIndustry reported, the game debuted at No. 7 on the United Kingdom sales charts.
Originally announced at E3 2009, The Last Guardian underwent a spate of delays before its eventual release. While the game was originally slated for the PlayStation 3, it was reintroduced and moved onto the PlayStation 4 during Sony’s E3 2015 presentation. Last September, the game saw an additional brief delay before its eventual December release.
In a post announcing the delay, Sony Computer Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida wrote that the game needed additional time for troubleshooting before its launch.
“Fumito Ueda, gen DESIGN and JAPAN Studio have a wonderful vision for The Last Guardian’s touching, emotional journey of friendship and trust, and we want to deliver the most polished experience possible for our fans who have supported us for so long.” Yoshida said.
Like its PlayStation 2 predecessors Ico from 2001 and 2005’s Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian is anchored around action-platforming elements and features your character interacting with a large bird-like creature.
